Goulburn's Paragon Cafe can fairly be described as an icon of Goulburn. It was opened in January 1940 by Jim Sophios and Jack Simos as a mixed business. In 1948 Steve and June Karagis acquired the Paragon, and established what was to be its famous and extensive a la carte menu. The Paragon became a favourite lunch spot for passing motorists, back when the Hume Highway used to pass through Goulburn. The Cafe moved premises from 150 Auburn Street in 1987, 174 Auburn Street. At the time of celebrating the cafe's 70th birthday in 2010, the Kontos family had owned the Paragon for almost 30 years, firstly in partnership with the Ganiatsos family, then the Fatouros family. In 2007 the Peter and Maria Kontos and their children acquired sole ownership, being the longest owners of the Paragon.
