Cemeteries

 

Cemetery records provide a wealth of information for family history researchers, including dates of birth and death, occupation, and religion. There are approximately 39 cemeteries located within the Goulburn Mulwaree Council area.

The cemetery indexes below range from some of the earliest burials in Goulburn, right up to 1990. The information differs from index to index. Early historic cemeteries are partially based on headstone transcriptions completed by local historical groups. Later records are indexed burial records from the original cemetery ledgers.

The Library acknowledges that the indexes below may not be comprehensive and may contain inaccuracies. As with all historical information, we have done the best we can with the records available to us.

Historic (Inactive) Cemetery Indexes

Friends of Goulburn Historic Cemeteries - launched in August 2023, this website has cemetery indexes, photos, and research put together by the Friends of Goulburn Historic Cemeteries Group.

Mortis Street Cemetery
The old general cemetery contains burials predominantly from 1830-1903, and includes most denominations with the exception of Church of England.

St Saviour's Cemetery
Church of England cemetery burials between 1830-1937.

Jewish Cemetery
Situated in Long St., Goulburn's Historic Jewish Cemetery was listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in 2021. There are burials between 1844 and 1943.

Kenmore Hospital Cemetery
Kenmore Hospital Cemetery was active between 1895-1942. Please note, there are no headstones in the Kenmore Hospital Cemetery, and there is no public access.

Goulburn General Cemetery Indexes

The multi-denominational General Cemetery is Goulburn's primary cemetery. The earliest burials are from 1903.

    Other Active Cemetery Indexes

  • St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Cemetery - known as Kenmore Cemetery. Consecrated in 1890. This cemetery is often confused with the Kenmore Hospital Cemetery, but the two are not connected.
  • Tallong Cemetery - located in the village of Tallong, 32km east of Goulburn. Consecrated in 1910.
  • Tarago Cemetery - located in the village of Tarago, 39km south of Goulburn. Consecrated in 1888.

  • The Goulburn District Cemetery Transcriptions index contains names and the cemetery in which their headstone was transcribed. Local historian, Stuart Anderson, underwent the mammoth project of transcribing over 60 small cemeteries in the greater Goulburn area. Stuart gained permission to access private properties to record the headstones for the benefit of other family historians, and completed the project in 1987. With permission from his estate, we are extremely grateful to be able to digitise the index of this series. For further detail on their headstone transcription, contact the Library.
