Mandelson's Hotel, Goulburn

Johnson-Barrett, RenateNov 2001

Restored exterior, cnr Sloane & Clinton Sts, Goulburn.

The Australian Heritage Registered Mandelson’s hotel (also known as the Mulwaree or Goulburn Hotel) was established under the name the “Goulburn Hotel” in 1840 under the first owner Nathan Mandelson. The building had been constructed the previous year by John Cole. It passed through many hands during its life and by the 90s had fallen into disrepair. Noel and Renate Barrett bought the property in 1999 and restored it to original order, including replacing most of the ground level flooring, removing paint and refurnishing.

The hotel has a rich history including; being home to the office of Mr Deniehy’s solicitors practice from 1854 to 1858; being the location of the first telegram sent from Goulburn to Sydney by Mr R Craig on the 17th of May 1858; and hosting Governor and Lady Belmorew the evening before the official ceremonies for the opening of the Goulburn railway station.
