The Goulburn Campus of Illawarra Institute of Technical and Further Education (TAFE) developed out of the original Mechanics Institute which was completed in 1885. It is still located on the corner of Auburn and Montague Streets. With Goulburn Technical College opening on 14 March 1901, technical education moved to this new site on the corner of Bourke and Verner Streets, which remains as the Goulburn Conservatorium. As the Bourke Street facility also become inadequate for educational needs, in 1976 the grounds of the former Presbyterian Ladies College were purchased by the State Government and the site converted to become Argyle College of TAFE, later known as the Goulburn Campus of Illawarra Institute of TAFE.
