St John's Orphanage for boys, located on Mundy St, Goulburn, operated from 1905 to 1978, and St Joseph's Orphanage for girls, located on Taralga Road, operated from 1907 to 1978. Both of these Catholic institutions were run by the Sisters of Mercy, and the buildings were designed by renowned local architect, E C Manfred. The Salvation Army ran Gill Memorial Boys Home from 1936 to 1976, and Saint Saviour's Girls Home was operated by the Anglican Church from 1929 to 1969.
