Published in 1888, this is the first volume of the Australian Men of Mark. It presents notable men of the nineteenth century and their representative careers. Arranged alphabetically by surname, the men have been selected from every walk of Colonial life, including politicians, industrialists and traders, emigrants and pioneers. Each memoir presents a reproduction of the social and political conditions or the person's times, and each is accompanied by a full-paged portrait by a well-known artist of the period.
