Goulburn has been the home of many theatres, with the most iconic of these now gone. The Empire Theatre, located at 225 Auburn Street, arose out of the earlier Oddfellows' Hall. During the 1920s, it was remodelled by owners Mr and Mrs W J Nicholson, and the new Empire Theatre opened on 15 April 1930 as one of only five picture palace movie theatres to operate in Australia. Also known as an atmospheric theatre, the new Empire was renowned for its lavish interior and Spanish influence. In 1948 it was acquired by Greater Union, and renamed the Odeon. It closed in July 1966, and was demolished.
