Goulburn has been the home of many theatres, with the most iconic of these now gone. The Empire Theatre, located at 225 Auburn Street, arose out of the earlier Oddfellows' Hall. During the 1920s, it was remodelled by owners Mr and Mrs W J Nicholson, and the new Empire Theatre opened on 15 April 1930 as one of only five picture palace movie theatres to operate in Australia. Also known as an atmospheric theatre, the new Empire was renowned for its lavish interior and Spanish influence. In 1948 it was acquired by Greater Union, and renamed the Odeon. It closed in July 1966, and was demolished.
The Hoyts Ritz Theatre was also located in Auburn Street. Other theatres mentioned include Theatre and Public Hall licences in 1959/60 for the Liedertafel Hall in Goldsmith Street, the Lilac Time Hall in McKell Place, the Masonic Hall, Railways and Tramways Institute, Recreation Hall Showground, Southern Cross Hall, St Patrick's Hall. The Odeon and Ritz were licensed at that time for movies.
