Braemar House [vertical file]

c.1990-2025
Archives
A house was first built in 1821 by Joshua John Moore, a grazier from England, on the property now known as Braemar on Mummel Road, Goulburn. The current Georgian homestead, Braemar House, is on 30 acres that run down to Rossi River, with access to an additional 1100 acres across the road. It is believed to have been constructed between 1860 and 1875, and sits on what was originally part of Hannibal Macarthur's large Kingsdale Estate, so was possibly constructed much earlier. From 1877, owner Arthur Gray operated the house as the Farmer's Rest Inn which was purchased by Francis Rossi in 1880. The license lapsed completely in 1883. Rossi extended the house in 1888, but was forced to sell both the house and land in 1892 following crippling legal debts incurred by the St Saviour's Cathedral dispute. Augustus Gibbs/Gibbes named the property Braemar after his family's Scottish connections and also undertook considerable extensions to the house. Gibbs and his wife Annie lived in the house until 1912, succeeded by the Poidevin family. Paul and Ann Poidevin took up residence after their marriage in 1951, and their extended family have lived in Braemar House since then.
