The Anglican Diocese of Goulburn was created in 1863 by Queen Victoria by Royal Letters Patent. The first Bishop of St Saviour's Cathedral was Thomas Mesac. With Federation and the formation of Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory, the Diocese was renamed the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn. The Cathedral remains the seat of the Diocese in Goulburn. One of the most notable occurrences in Diocesan history was that of the 1884 dispute between Captain Francis Rossi, Bishop Mesac and the Dean of the Cathedral, Archdeacon Puddicombe, over trusteeship of the lands on which the original church, and the later cathedral, was built during the 1870s. Further afield, in Taralga, the history of the Young Anglicans has been written by Pat Williamson.
