Notes towards a history of the Goulburn Mechanics' Institute (1853-1946)
1978
Book
The work contains a collection of working research notes and sources for study on the Goulburn Mechanics' Institute. It contains an essay on background perspective, including the development of mechanics' institutes in Great Britain and their spread to Australia. The bibliography of background sources is a working reference tool. The chronology was compiled from the minute books and annual reports of the institute. It is followed by an inventory of records of the institute, which are at present located in Goulburn. The appendices include membership statistics for the duration of the institute, and a list of Presidents. A collection of extracts and photographs has also been included in the appendices.

Goulburn Mechanics' Institute was one of the first and therefore oldest institutes to be established in New South Wales outside Sydney, Goulburn being the first town in the south-east region of New South Wales to establish a mechanics' institute. The inaugural meeting of the institute was held at the Commercial Hotel on the 27th of September 1853. Unlike many other institutes in New South Wales, the Goulburn Mechanics' Institute managed to survive for a longer period and was generally financially stable throughout its 91 years of operation.
