Subject: Blue Circle Southern Cement Limited (BCSC) own and operate the Marulan Limestone Quarry. Part of the normal mining operation involves the removal of large quantities of overburden and side burden to allow access to the limestone resource. As part of a waste minimisation/utilisation program, the company has identified an area of Clayshale which is suitable for the manufacture of cement at its Berrima Cement Works. Although the Clayshale will be removed as waste as part of the ongoing limestone quarry operation, extracting the material separately constitutes a designated development, requiring an EIS to support a Development Application to Mulwaree Shire Council. In producing this EIS, the report addressed environmental issues associated with road transportation, flora and fauna, archaeology, noise and dust, and water quality. The report concludes that the project will provide significant positive environmental benefits. By using the Clayshale as a resource rather than as a waste material, BCSC will minimise waste and maximise the use of the region's natural resources.
