Subject: For almost 200 years the first generation entitled to call itself Australian by birth has remained 'a neglected race of men and women'. No national myths or legends surround these Currency Lads and Lasses. They are not enshrined in the ballads, songs and folklore of early Australia. They have been dismissed as 'the children of the convicts' and mainly ignored as part of the development of a unique Australian society. Almost all that has been known about them comes from a handful of opinions and assumptions of a few 'respectable' gentlemen of the time. [Inside front flap]
