An archaeological assessment of the proposed subdivision area at Eastgrove, Goulburn, N.S.W. : a report to the Council of the City of Goulburn, N.S.W

Hughes, Philip1984
Books
Subject: Goulburn City Council commissioned this archaelogical assessment for the proposed subdivision of Eastgrove, Goulburn, in order to clarify earlier reports of potential Aboriginal burials in the area. The report concludes "..it would be highly unlikely that burials that might be present could be detected by ground survey ... [due to previous] ... landuse disturbance." In addition, the report noted: a) it is unlikely that the burial ground was in fact located in that area; b) even if burials were present they could not readily be detected by field survey, and c) if stone artefacts do occur, they will be sparsely distributed and difficult to locate on the well vegetated ground surface (pp.8-9).

Notes:
"Goulburn City Council has a long-term proposal to subdivide an area of land in Eastgrove for housing ... In two published accounts of the history of the Goulburn district there are brief references to Aboriginal burials dating from the 1840s and 1850s occurring on the hill above Lansdowne homestead. As the proposed subdivision is in the general vicinity of Lansdowne, the Council requested that the consultant: a) assess the likelihood that burials occur in the subdivision area, b) assess the need for a comprehensive archaeological field survey of the subdivision area and its surrounds, and c) consider suitable measures to comply with the provisions of National Parks and Wildlife Act, 1974, whereby Aboriginal relics are protected." (p.1).
